Revise without Losing Your Mind: How to Stay Motivated and Focused

Revising can seem like an endless task, which is made worse if you struggle to stay motivated and focused. Procrastination is all too easy when revising, especially if your revision involves using the internet. Instead of losing your mind before exam season, check out these simple tips for effective revision.

Structure Your Revision Sessions

Sitting and staring at chunks of information isn’t an effective way to revise. Neither is reading through pages and pages of a book with no end goal. Whilst it’s important to read back through your work, it becomes a lot easier to revise when you have a structured session in place.

Start by writing down the information you need to learn before your upcoming test or exam, then structure your revision timetable accordingly. Block out time when you study, and factor in breaks every 25 minutes or so to keep focused.

Revise in a Group

Staying motivated and focused is best done around other people. Revising in a group is a great way to bounce ideas off one another and stay on track. You can do this with other friends in the same class as you or look to see if your teacher or other students are running revision sessions after class.

If you don’t have anybody revising at the same time as you, try revising at your school library or in an internet cafe. This way, you still have that added motivation of seeing people around you focused and determined, which can help ward off procrastination.

Create Visual Aids

Staring at a revision booklet or pages of writing is a surefire way to lose motivation and focus. By creating visual revision aids, you can revise and have fun at the same time. Some ideas for visual aids include posters, revision cards, flow charts, and graphs.

You can use an online graph maker to put together important topics in minutes. Once you have visual aids, you can test yourself whenever you have some free time, to see if the information is still sticking. Your visual aids should be used as a cue to notice what areas require more of your focus.

Block Notifications

During revision time, especially if using the internet, it’s important to keep distractions to a minimum. Most of us are easily swayed by a singular notification, going into a downward spiral of losing precious revision hours. This can lead to feelings of frustration and guilt for not achieving our desired goals.

Blocking notifications on your laptop or phone stops you from becoming distracted during revision time. You can also use a website blocker, which allows students to remain focused and determined on their goal, without getting lost in the YouTube algorithm.

Staying motivated and focused on revision goals starts with a structured revision plan. Revising in a group can improve focus, as can the use of visual aids. To keep sane and reduce the risk of procrastination during revision, make sure to block any websites or notifications that will cause you to lose focus.
