What Is Sports First Aid?
Sports first aid is the help you give when someone is injured or taken ill during training, a match or any physical activity, until a paramedic or doctor takes over. It covers the same basics as any first aid, such as checking breathing and giving CPR. It also focuses on the injuries that happen most in sport, like sprains, knocks to the head and injuries caused by bad weather.
First aid for sports is a little different from first aid at home or at work. You’re often outdoors, the player may want to carry on, and you have to decide quickly whether they can play on or need to stop. This course helps you make that call with confidence.
Who Should Take This Sports First Aid Course?
This course is for anyone who coaches, teaches, trains or helps out in sport. You don’t need a medical background. If people are active in your care, even for one session a week, these skills are worth having.
- Sports coaches and assistant coaches, from grassroots to club level
- PE teachers, school sports staff and teaching assistants
- Personal trainers and fitness instructors
- Gym, leisure centre and sports facility staff
- Referees, match officials and team managers
- Club volunteers and parents who help at training or matches
- Athletes who want to look after themselves and their teammates
Whoever you are, the goal is the same: to know what to do when a player goes down. If you need a first aid in sport course Certificate this is the perfect course for you. Coaching a children’s team? Our Paediatric First Aid Training covers babies and children.
Why Take This Sports First Aid Course?
Most sports injuries don’t happen in front of a medical team. They happen at Sunday league games, school PE lessons and early-morning gym sessions. This sports first aid training prepares you for the moments you’re most likely to face.
- If a player goes down hard, you'll know how to check them step by step and decide what to do next.
- After a clash of heads, you'll spot the signs of concussion and know when to take someone off.
- When someone rolls an ankle, you'll recognise a sprain and give the right first care.
- If someone collapses, you'll know how to start CPR and keep going until help arrives.
- On a freezing or scorching day, you'll recognise frostbite, heatstroke and other weather injuries.
- If someone has an asthma attack mid-session, you'll know the signs and how to help.
- When a helmet or kit needs to come off, you'll do it safely and with the player's consent.
These are everyday moments in sport. That’s why first aid for sport is worth learning before you need it.

FAQs About Sports First Aid Course
What is a sports first aid course?
A sports first aid course teaches you how to help someone who is injured or taken ill during sport. You learn how to check a casualty, give CPR, treat common sports injuries such as sprains, spot concussion, and respond to medical emergencies until help arrives.
Can I do a first aid in sport course online?
Yes. You can learn first aid in sport online, at your own pace, on a phone, tablet or laptop. It’s a flexible way to learn what to do and why. Practising CPR on a training manikin adds hands-on confidence, and some clubs and employers ask for practical training too, so check what yours needs.
Is sports first aid different from general first aid?
Yes, in its focus. General first aid covers emergencies anywhere. First aid for sport focuses on the injuries and illnesses that happen during physical activity, such as sprains, head injuries and sudden collapse. It also helps you decide whether a player can carry on or needs to stop.
Is this course suitable for personal trainers and coaches?
Yes. It covers the injuries and emergencies you’re most likely to see in the gym, on the pitch or at outdoor sessions, including CPR, sprains, head injuries and asthma attacks. The National Careers Service says it’s usual for personal trainers to have a first aid certificate that includes CPR, so check which kind your gym or insurer accepts.
Does this sports first aid training include CPR?
Yes. Module 3 teaches CPR step by step, including chest compressions and the recovery position. If your role needs hands-on practice, or training on a defibrillator (AED), add a practical session as well.
What sports injuries does this course cover?
The course covers common injuries such as sprains, bruises and black eyes, and major injuries such as head injuries, concussion and fractures. It also covers weather-related injuries like frostbite and heatstroke, and medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, seizures and asthma attacks.
What should I do if I think a player has concussion?
Take them out of play straight away, and don’t let them return to sport within 24 hours. The UK concussion guidelines for grassroots sport sum it up as “If in doubt, sit them out“. The player should contact NHS 111 within 24 hours, and anyone whose symptoms get worse should call 999 or go to A&E.
How long does a sports first aid certificate last?
Our certificate doesn’t expire. We recommend refreshing your training every 3 years, because guidance changes and skills fade when you don’t use them.
How often is the course content updated?
To ensure compliance with the latest first aid regulations and best practices, course content is reviewed and updated periodically.
Will I receive a certificate after completing this course?
Yes, you will receive a FREE Digital Certificate after completing this Sports First Aid training online.
However, if you want, you can also order the Digital Transcript, Hardcopy Certificate & Transcript.
