Focus Awards Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (RQF)

61 STUDENTS

The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA), historically known as the A1 Assessor Award, is a formally recognised qualification for professionals assessing learners’ occupational competence, vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.

This is not a knowledge-only qualification. Learners must demonstrate their assessment skills by conducting real assessments in both a workplace setting and an education or training environment. You will therefore need access to learners you can assess in both contexts to complete the required evidence.

Delivered through flexible distance learning, the qualification can typically be completed within 3–6 months, with up to 12 months available depending on your pace. It is an Ofqual-regulated qualification awarded by Focus Awards under qualification number 601/6104/8.

This qualification combines underpinning knowledge with demonstrated practical skill. Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Understand the principles and requirements of assessment, including different assessment methods and how to plan them.

Understand how to involve learners and others in the assessment process, and how to make sound assessment decisions.

Understand quality assurance of the assessment process, and how to manage information relating to assessment.

Plan, carry out and make decisions on the assessment of occupational competence in the work environment.

Plan, carry out and make decisions on the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in training or classroom settings.

Maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing in both work-based and non-work-based environments.

Knowledge + Competence: The qualification develops understanding alongside the ability to demonstrate assessment competence across different learning environments.

Method of Assessment

The Focus Awards Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (RQF) is internally assessed. It is not assessed through a single final exam or written test alone — learners must demonstrate, in practice, that they can assess others competently in both a work environment and a training or classroom environment.

To achieve this qualification, you will need to carry out real, observed assessment activity, including planning assessments, making assessment decisions, and providing feedback to real learners. This practical evidence is combined with a portfolio that demonstrates your underpinning knowledge of assessment principles, quality assurance, and legal requirements.

Evidence for the Portfolio May Include

Assessor Observation

Observation of your own assessing practice, demonstrating your ability to assess learners competently.

Witness Testimony

Testimony from people who have observed you carrying out assessment activities.

Learner Products & Records

Learner products and assessment records produced through assessments you have carried out.

Worksheets

Completed worksheets that provide supporting evidence of your assessment knowledge and understanding.

Assignments, Projects & Reports

Assignments, projects and reports demonstrating your understanding of assessment principles and requirements.

Oral & Written Questioning

Records of oral and written questioning used to confirm your underpinning knowledge.

Learner & Peer Reports

Reports from learners and peers that contribute to the evidence of your assessment practice.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning (RPL), where applicable, may be used as part of the assessment evidence.

Assessment focus: You will demonstrate both your knowledge and your ability to carry out assessment activities in real settings, supported by a structured portfolio of evidence.

Certification

On successful completion of all three mandatory units and portfolio evidence, learners are awarded the Focus Awards Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (RQF) — a nationally recognised, Ofqual-regulated qualification.

Certificates are issued by Focus Awards once all assessment requirements have been verified and the qualification has been confirmed as achieved.
