Course Curriculum

In module one, we will explore what it means to have special educational needs, looking at its definition and exploring the key areas of SEN. It also discusses special educational needs provision in mainstream schools.

In module two, we will learn about SEN support and learning requirements, taking an in-depth look at whole school assessment and tracking, including the assess, plan, do, review cycle.

In module three, we will look at the different ways that SEN Teaching Assistants can provide high-quality teaching (HQT) support. It also explores strategies and skills for developing working relationships with pupils and parents.

In module four, we will learn a range of teaching strategies for maintaining an inclusive learning environment in the classroom, planning lessons, providing quality feedback, effective questioning, and developing independence in SEN pupils. 

In module five, we will explore effective ways of communicating and interacting with SEN pupils, deepening our understanding of speech, language and communication needs. It also includes important information on communicating with autistic children.

In module six, we will deepen our understanding of cognition and learning in SEN pupils, exploring some key classroom management strategies and specific moderate learning difficulties. 

In module seven, we will gain an in-depth understanding of social, emotional and mental health difficulties, familiarising with some classroom strategies for providing quality learning support for children with ADHD.

In module eight, we will take a look at sensory and physical needs, focusing on hearing impairment, visual impairment and physical disabilities. 

In module nine, we will explore in detail the role, responsibilities and career path of a SENCO, taking a look at the SENCO role in practice, as well as the 2015 SEND Code of Practice.

In module ten, we will explore the duties of governing bodies and trust boards, develop our understanding of the definition of SEN, and learn about the SEN budget, time and resources.

In module eleven, we will broaden our knowledge of the status of the SENCO role, and ways to develop your status as a brand new SENCO. It also explores the role of the SENCO and senior leadership team. 

In module twelve, we will learn about the SENCO’s role in working within the multi-professional network Services, with essential information on leading and supporting colleagues.

In module thirteen, we will gain a comprehensive understanding of relationship building in SEN support and the potential barriers to building relationships. It also explores the importance of family support, education and health plans.

In module fourteen, we will learn about the management of SEN records, how to make a referral for an EHC needs assessment, what to expect in a SEND tribunal, and other key topics.

In module fifteen, we will look at the challenges that SEN teaching professionals face and the barriers to teaching,  with tips on how to grow your network and practical information on managing the National Award for SEN Coordination.

In this final module, we will get to grips with the language of SEND and what inclusive education means. It also discusses the SENCO’s role in training and developing others.
